The beauty of the landscape of this small village was rewarded in 2018 with the Orange Flag, the prestigious quality mark awarded by the Italian Touring Club for tourist-environmental development.

The city walls, with their semi-cylindrical towers

The village of Campodimele is perched and has a circular and compact architectural structure, typical of medieval villages. The city walls, with their semi-cylindrical towers still visible, are protected as a heritage site.

The walkway outside the walls offers such romantic views of the valleys that it is called the “Via dell’Amore” (Way of Love).

The alleys of the old town centre can only be explored on foot and offer wonderful panoramic views on Monte Faggeto, a splendid balcony over the Gulf of Gaeta, and the more distant Monte Ruazzo. A visit to the ancient Convent of Sant’Onofrio, built in the 11th century by Benedictine monks, is very suggestive.

Campodimele is the ‘village of longevity’. The village’s centenarian inhabitants have aroused great interest among scientists. There seem to be two characteristics that help them live so long: the pure air and the ‘cicerchia’. The D.O.P. cicerchia is a legume from the Middle East that grows on poor soils and in difficult conditions. The ‘cicerchia’ must be soaked overnight and then boiled and flavoured with ham, garlic and shallots.

Try ‘laina con i fagioli’, a typical Campodimele dish with ancient origins, now the protagonist of a popular festival. It is a type of pasta similar to fettuccine pasta dressed with bean sauce.
